Large cumulonimbus clouds, or "thunderheads," developed over the Malay Peninsula on many afternoons. We watched them carefully and if one approached we took down some (or all) sail. Thunderstorms sometimes have powerful winds which can rip sails and cause other damage. We tended to be cautious, preferring to go slowly instead of breaking things.
